5 ways to use an ‘Elizabethan Collar’ (if you are a dog)
Flossie here. I have been convalescing. (An operation of the female kind left me with some fetching stitches) For two weeks I have been sporting a rather ridiculous Cone on my head. The cone prevented me from licking the said stitches. This would have been a very bad thing apparently. I know this because every time I attempted it, the Boss intervened and the aptly named, Elizabethan Collar, was brought out. At first, I admit, this unusual headgear worried me. It did not seem to mean that I was about to go out for a walk – unlike the Halti which goes over my nose and can be annoying…

Making Assumptions
Jumping to conclusions, making assumptions – all can be embarrassing. We all do it to some extent I am sure. The other morning I was in a well-known Chemist’s in town with a colleague who is also a good friend. Paying for a small number of items I then waited for my friend to pay for hers. This particular well-known store has a points card system. My friend had lost hers and suggested she put the points on mine. (I was happy to oblige). The young sales girl smiled and took my card, saying to my friend, “You are going to put it on your mum’s card yeah?” My response was…

The Final Countdown
The final instalment of my Californian Memories will be published next week. Apologies if anyone has received advanced notification – a slight technical hitch occurred with the scheduling.

Prying Eyes
We have a small barn in our front garden that for several years, has served as an external office. It is pretty and quaint and its top floor provides a delightful guest bedroom and en-suite. The upstairs East facing window overlooks farmland and distant forests. However, downstairs has always seemed a little dark. The only source of natural light comes from the large glass double doors that face north-east. We have recently obtained planning permission to add a window to the downstairs wall that faces the road and East. This has just been unveiled and has yet to have curtains hung or shutters attached. That one window has made a…

San Francisco Bay Area – just another day
More memories from my lone Californian trip of 1997 – This morning, a blue sky opened above me, clouds rolling away to reveal a shiny new sun. Just another day on this crazy holiday I have chosen to take. I am sitting here, alone in the back garden ostensibly reading but really, just sitting and thinking. I woke this morning with a real urge to pack my bag and head for home. It isn’t that I am not having fun. It isn’t that I am not constantly amazed by what is going on around me. It isn’t even that the woman I am travelling with happens to be a bi-sexual,…

Purple is not my colour…
Flossie here. Oh my goodness – I thought we had cracked The Common. It would appear, from this morning’s experience that we have not. I don’t know exactly what went wrong. I just know that a series of events occurred which ended in disaster. For one thing, there was a small Skye Terrier who took a shine to me. As soon as we got on The Common, the little dog spotted me. I had to run over and say ‘hello’ of course. The little dog’s owner, clad in a purple coat, seemed very friendly and extended her hand to me. Her companion, wearing grey, ignored me. Perhaps the purple lady…

TalkTalk or TalkLess?
I changed our broadband service last week to TalkTalk from BT. Sorry BT, you had done nothing wrong except to charge me an extraordinary amount for your service. Maybe I didn’t need ‘Total broadband’ complete with internet phone etc. We never used it. What we did use was the wireless broadband – all over the house. At times there could be four or even more laptops drawing on the wireless resources available to us, not to mention an assortment of iPhones and iPads. Technology ‘rocks’ in this family! The chap from TalkTalk just happened to phone when I was in the mood for change. He persuaded me that his was…

The Silverado Trail – fame at last?
The chauffeur continues to smile at us and I nod politely. Annie is striding ahead. I am aware, as we continue our walk, that to anyone glancing out of the restaurant windows, it would appear that Annie and I have just stepped out of the stretch limousine and that the chauffeur has just tipped his cap to us. Maybe we could pass for celebrities of the more eccentric kind. I grin as we mount the restaurant steps.

Did I know that?
“Did I know this?” Now, did she know this? Probably not. I have told each of my children things about me as situations have arisen so each knows of something from my past I am sure. If they all got together could they write my biography? An interesting thought!

Home alone – mechanical breakdown
We have had a run of household appliances breaking down, since just before Christmas. First, there was the boiler, oh and next there was the boiler and yes, then the boiler again! In fact, we have now been without heating for more than four full weeks due to a blockage lurking somewhere in the pipes. Thankfully, it has been milder this last couple of weeks but every time we hit a cold spell I shiver and adjust the settings on the temporary heaters that we have strategically placed around the house. The dogs particularly like the halogen heater that is currently sitting in the corner of the living room. Convinced…
